A "Yay" and a sigh of relief
Wednesday, December 21, 2005
So, as you can tell by my previous post, my week didn't start out to be the greatest. I'm just now getting to the point where I'm not constantly kicking myself for not staying at the company Christmas party until the end. So, Monday was a pretty crappy day. It was followed by another pretty crappy experience. Yesterday morning, Heather called me right when I got to work to tell me that the truck wouldn't start. We were going to be driving the truck to Arizona today (Wednesday) to spend Christmas with Heather's family. Heather's brother-in-law was also going to try selling our truck for us. We have tickets to stay at a hotel in Vegas tonight and we would drive the rest of the way on Thursday. We have plane tickets to fly back the following Wednesday. Everything has been planned for quite some time, and yesterday the truck wouldn't start. My stress level was multiplied by about 10 or so. It was too late to cancel the hotel in Vegas without having to pay for it anyway. We could drive the car, but if we did, the plane tickets we bought would be useless and I don't know if we'd be able to get our money back on those. I'm surprised I slept at all last night. Well, Heather's cousin was nice enough to look at the truck for us last night and wasn't really sure what the problem was. He was going to come back over this morning and look at it in daylight. I got an update from Heather a couple hours ago and it was either going to be something simple and cheap or something really expensive. I figured, with my luck, it was easily going to be really expensive. I got a call from Heather about 20 minutes ago. The first word out of her mouth was, "Yay!" I breathed a deep sigh of relief. Our trip will continue as planned.

My company Christmas party experience
Monday, December 19, 2005
So, this is officially one of the most disappointing things that have happened to me in a long time. I'm hoping that posting about it will get it out of my head, because it's already driving me crazy.
My company has a yearly Christmas party for it's employees. It's a fairly big company but has grown a lot in the last couple years I've been working there. The company Christmas party used to be a catered lunch during business hours. This is the first year they had a real "Christmas party" outside of work. It was a semi-formal event and there was food, a live band and even dancing. (Heather and I weren't too excited about the dancing.) Well, we got all dressed up and went to the party Saturday night. I believe there are about 350-400 people that work at the company. I'm sure not all of them came, but most who did brought a guest. In my estimate, there were about 500-600 people at the party. On the way in, you filled out your ticket stub with your name to be entered in the drawings for door prizes. As most would expect, you have to be present to win. We went and sat down at a table by ourselves, since I wasn't able to find any people that I spend much time around. The place filled up and they brought out the food. The food was good and so was the dessert. There ended up being several people at the table that I didn't know, so it wasn't all that fun. We ended up leaving shortly after eating. As we were getting in the car, I said these exact words to Heather. "Watch, the first time in my life that I'll win something and I won't be here." Well, I went about the rest of the weekend feeling perfectly normal. This morning, I went to check my work e-mail at home and I had a couple messages from others in my department. They were e-mailing to rub in the bad news. My name had been drawn to win something and I wasn't there to claim it. The something that I should have won was an $1,100 27" flat-panel TV.
