Cool service

So I came across this website today called TextPayMe. They basically allow you to send people money via text message from your cell phone. Kinda like PayPal but with a twist. If you sign up now, they'll even give you $5 free. I gave it a shot. It sounds like a pretty good idea and besides, you can't beat free money!

Although it sounds gimmicky, it's actually a good idea in my opinion. Here are some examples of things they suggest using the service for:
  • No more verbal IOUs!
  • Split your restaurant bills right then and there!
  • Pay your team or club dues anywhere and anytime
  • Pitch in real money instead of IOUs for a shared gift
  • Settle your roommate's rent and utility bills on the spot
  • Pay for items with your credit card on Craigslist
  • Accept credit card payments in any face-to-face transactions
  • Use TextPayMe as a substitute for cash and personal checks
I can think of several occasions when I could have used this service.

Nope. They don't charge anything.

How do they make money?

They'll eventually charge service fees for certain types of transactions:

But if you sign up during the beta period, it'll be free for life to send money.
